2026 Wastewater Treatment Plant

As part of their Grade 4 Social Studies unit on “Wastewater Treatment and Reuse,” students visited the Ochiai Water Reclamation Center.

Before the visit, students explored how much water we use in our daily lives, where our water comes from, and where it goes after we use it.

During the visit, students learned how wastewater is cleaned step by step as it passes through various treatment processes, including grit chambers, sedimentation tanks, and aeration tanks. They also discovered that treated water is released into rivers, reused for flushing toilets in buildings, and used to help restore clean water to local rivers. Students also learned that the space above the facility is open to the community as a public park.

This field trip was a valuable opportunity for students to gain a deeper understanding of the water cycle and see how wastewater is treated, reused, and returned to nature.
